Inwards And Onwards

I've had plenty of time to take stock of life over the last few months. Housebound and ill, the only directions I could take were towards Heaven and inwards. Turns out, the two aren't entirely unrelated.

Yesterday, I was visiting my local supermarket when I noticed something strange. Well, it seemed strange to me anyway.

The checkout operator was asian. In fact, I know he was a Muslim. It suddenly dawned on me as my pack of chops whizzed towards me that he must handle tons of pork products every day.

Here's an old joke:

A Russian man saved his roubles for twenty years to buy a new car. After choosing the model he wants, he's not the least bit surprised or even concerned to learn that it will take two years for the new car to be delivered. He thanks the salesman and starts to leave, but as he reaches the door he pauses and turns back to the salesman. "Do you know which week two years from now the new car will arrive?"

A couple of weeks ago, I attended a different church as part of my Reader Training programme. The one I chose was fairly close to home and I knew the vicar so, I thought, this first church visit should be a fairly gentle introduction to the process. Wrong!
